Richard Trevithick memorial at Abercynon

Richard Trevithick memorial at Abercynon

The stone memorial was erected in 1978 on behalf of the Abercynon Trevithick Committee and paid for by public subscription.

The wooden sculpture was erected in 2004 by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to mark the 200th anniversary of railways. From the display it reads : “February 21, 1804 saw the first-ever journey of a steam locomotive, hauling a load on rails. Richard Trevithick successfully drove his engine and five wagons for five miles along the rail tramroad, from Penydarren to Navigation, Abercynon, with 70 men and 10 tons of iron on board. This display commemorates the finishing point of that historic journey.”
