Aberdare Caradog Statue, Victoria Square
The Aberdare Caradog Statue is located in Victoria Square in the centre of Aberdare town. A photo of the head of Caradog has been used as the Aberdare Blog website Logo since 2005.
Griffith Rhys Jones, or Caradog as he was commonly known (December 21, 1834 – December 4, 1897) was a Welsh conductor of the famous ‘Côr Mawr’ of some 460 voices (the South Wales Choral Union), which twice won first prize at Crystal Palace choral competitions in London in the 1870s
Griffith Rhys Jones was born in Trecynon, near Aberdare. He worked as a blacksmith at the Aberdare Ironworks in the village of Llwydcoed.
He was buried at Aberdare Cemetery, near Trecynon.
In 1920 a statue designed by Sir William Goscombe John was erected in his honour in Victoria Square, Aberdare. (There are many other photos of works by Goscombe John in the Aberdare Blog Gallery).
