Leanne Wood Podcast Press Release 23 January 2006
First podcast by Welsh politician launched by Leanne Ionawr 23ain.....January 23rd 2006
PLAID Cymru AM Leanne Wood has today (Monday 23 January) become the first Welsh politician to start a weekly podcast on her website, which now also includes a blog.
Her move is another attempt to use innovative ways to engage with her constituents. The podcasts can be downloaded from Leanne's website www.welshpolitics.com, her first discussion covers topics such as cannabis, prostitution and her competition for tickets to the first session in the new Assembly chamber.
Speaking about the launch of her weekly podcast and weblog, Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood, AM for South Wales Central, commented:
"This is an attempt to contact my constituents in a new way. I already write a number of columns in local newspapers and use them to engage with people in South Wales Central.
"I hope this will encourage young people to get involved in Welsh politics. We will have to see whether that ambition is fulfilled, but at least I will have another avenue for airing my thoughts. It is important that all elected representatives try to make themselves available to the public by using new technologies."
"I will try to avoid bland podcasts as much as possible, I want people to hear a new perspective on Welsh politics and I want people to contribute their ideas."

Notes
1) Leanne's new website will not be online at the welshpolitics.com address before Monday 23 January, before then the site can be accessed at www.leannewood.typepad.com
2) A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to. These files can be uploaded to a number of devices to play them including Apple's Ipod. However, neither podcasting nor listening to podcasts requires an iPod or other portable player, and no over-the-air broadcasting is required. The name association came about simply because Apple Computer's iPod was the best-selling portable digital audio player when podcasting began and was used by early practitioners.
3) However, the use of the "pod" name in 2004 probably played a part in Apple's development of podcasting products and services in 2005, further linking the device and the activity in the news media.
4) The editors of the New Oxford American Dictionary declared "podcasting" the 2005 word of the year in December, defining the term as "a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player".
