Rhondda Cynon Taf Council provide an Update on the restoration of Mountain Ash War Memorial after vandals stole precious plaques recently…
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has nearly completed temporary restoration plans put in place for Remembrance Day, following the mindless vandalism of Mountain Ash war memorial.
Outrage was caused when the bronze plaque on the memorial was stolen earlier this year, leading to concern and upset about the use of the sacred monument on November 11.
However, Council staff stepped in with a plan that would allow the memorial to be restored on a short-term basis, in time for the remembrance ceremony, with more permanent restoration to follow.
A blank marble plaque was commissioned and installed on the memorial and will remain until a new, bronze one can be inscribed and installed.
A mounted and framed image of the former plaque, which was stolen by the heartless offenders, will also be used in the Remembrance Day event to depict the former glory of the memorial.
Cllr Andrew Morgan, Ward member, said: “It still disgusts me that someone could even consider desecrating such a memorial by stealing the plaque.
“The main concern has always been to restore the memorial to a suitable standard in time for Remembrance Day, with permanent restoration to follow.
“Staff have worked hard to commission and install replacements and we hope these will suffice until we can put the permanent features in place.
“In the meantime, we continue to find those responsible for such an act and urge those with information to contact the police.”
