Croeso / Welcome for Prince Charles in the Valley

Prince Charles in PenderynThe warmest of Valleys welcomes was given to Prince Charles who visited Aberdare as part of a Royal Tour.

HRH Prince Charles the Prince of Wales came to see the new Visitor Centre at the world-famous Welsh Whisky Company distillery in the village of Penderyn, set in the beautiful landscape of Brecon Beacons National Park.

The whole village of Penderyn came to a standstill to greet and welcome Prince Charles.

Prince Charles takes a deep interest in the important things in life : the people, the land and the food we grow. He is a knowledgeable farmer who has championed the environmental cause for many, many years.

Thus we hope this Royal visit will encourage a greater interest in these subjects in Aberdare. We need to grow more of our own food in Aberdare and other former industrial areas and we need to husband and conserve the land and our resources more responsibly.

Ann Clwyd and the Ten Million Dollar Bag of Tomatoes

Ann Clwyd - Aberdare’s MP - drew attention to the plight of starving people in Zimbabwe yesterday in a debate in the House of Commons. She contributed a persuasive anecdote concerning her recent trip to South Africa…

While I was in South Africa a few weeks ago, Zimbabwean refugees handed me a note for 10 million Zimbabwean dollars. That buys a bag of tomatoes in Zimbabwe. Now Mugabe is prepared to starve his people to death for their votes. What kind of human being is President Mugabe ?

Welly Wanging and Wild Birds near Aberdare

Tawny Eagle at Fedw Hir Eco CentreOnce again Groundwork Trust host another Green Dayz Weekend at the Fedw Hir Eco Centre near Llwydcoed. The event runs this weekend on Saturday 17th May and Sunday 18th May from 10am until 4pm.

The fun-filled ‘green weekend’ is all free with plenty of activities to entertain the whole family including hands-on pottery and ceramic session, handmade twig pencil-making, felt-making, face-painting, willow weaving, hurdle fencing and … welly wanging.

For Saturday only there was grand show of eagles and owls, including the world’s largest owl who was, thankfully, quite placid and friendly.

According to the Groundwork Trust, Welly Wanging is a sport that originated in Britain, most likely in Yorkshire. Competitors are required to hurl a Wellington boot as far as possible within boundary lines.

Fighting for Community Garden

Mordecai's Field Allotment Trallwng PontypriddAdrian Shepherd is fighting for the survival of the Allotment Gardens at Trallwng, near Pontypridd.

This is the second allotment site in Rhondda Cynon Taf threatened with closure.

It defies common sense that in a time of rapidly rising energy costs, places to grow food locally are being stolen from communities in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

It Is Art, bach, Aberdare Art

Spring is in the air, the sap is rising and creative juices begin to flow in Aberdare.

By popular demand, we have commissioned an exhibition by our mysterious Aberdare Food Artist.

For the Philistine and untrained eye, these works of art look like an everyday meal of eggs, toast, tomato, and cheese.

But it is art, bach, Aberdare Art… click on the images to view the Spring Exhibition.
