Love your website! My husband and I have been in Aberdare several times, always looking for the old, now-closed, Ebenezer Chapel in Trecynon. In this last visit recently, we found it with the help of a very kind and generous couple who led us there. What an interesting chapel! We wanted to go inside, but it was closed and locked, and the caretaker wasn’t around. Does anyone have interior photos of this chapel? Is it ever possible to go inside? Thank you for any information! We hope to be back in Aberdare next September.

    Hi,

Yes, I saw those wonderful photos on this site! I had wondered if anyone had any photos of the interior. One thing my husband is eager to see is a plaque with one of his ancestor’s names who was the minister there for 40 years in the latter half of the 19th century. Next time we visit, we hope to be able to contact the caretaker and arrange for a tour of the inside. Thank you so much for responding to my message!

When I was in Aberdare this past September looking for Ebenezer Chapel, it struck me that in the 19th century, Aberdare had a LOT of churches! In the small town in the U.S. where I grew up we had maybe 5 churches. I counted a lot more than that in Aberdare. Is this perception correct? If so, it’s very interesting.

Okay, I’m going to try to answer my own question. On the books section of this site there’s a good piece on the number of chapels in the Cynon valley. If you include the active, vacant, demolished and converted, it’s an astonishing number!
