    Hello,
My Great Grandparents are buried in St Mary’s Church Yard and I would love to know whereabouts. Their names are Margaret & Edwin Bason, Edwin died on 25.11.1946 & Margaret on 21.01.1937. They lived at No 6 Powis Arms Yard, Welshpool. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Thank you Caroline

  2. Carol Dutchman-Smith Says:

Does anyone have any information relating to Thomas Maldwyn Price and/or Richard Maldwyn price both organists at St Mary’s and buried in the church yard. Both are distantly related to me

  3. ROY CLAFFEY Says:

CAROL – RE: RICHARD MALDWYN PRICE

I WAS A PUPIL OF DR. RICHARD MALDWYN PRICE FOR SEVEN YEARS UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1952. SOME YEARS AGO, I WROTE AN APPRECIATION OF HIM FOR A LOCAL MAGAZINE WHICH I MIGHT BE ABLE TO RECOVER. HIS FORMER COUNCIL HOUSE STILL STANDS IN HERE IN WELSHPOOL AND IS VIRTUALLY UNCHANGED. HE HAD A NO-GOOD BROTHER, IAGO, OF DUBIOUS MENTAL STATE WHO RUINED HIM FINANCIALLY. A WHILE BACK, THERE WAS A CAMPAIGN CENTRED IN BARMOUTH TO REVIVE “DICKIE’S” MUSIC AND I CONTRIBUTED TO THE EFFORT BUT IT SEEMED TO COME TO NOTHING. IF THERE IS ANYTHING SPECIFIC I CAN HELP YOU WITH, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

CAROLINE – RE: THE BASON FAMILY

THE BASONS WERE HAIRDRESSERS IN BERRIEW STREET, WELSHPOOL. THEIR DAUGHTER, DAWN, LIVES IN WREXHAM AND IS MARRIED TO A GLYN LEWIS.

  4. Rosemary Lewis-Jones Says:

I am also a distant relative of Thomas Price and Richard Maldwyn Price. I am very interested to read that there was a campaign in Barmouth to revive his music, I was totally unaware of this. It is extremely hard to find out much information about both Men, but it seems that their music was outstanding.Other than a mention in the “Welsh Biography online” they do not seem to be mentioned much. Whilst researching my family tree I discovered that Iago Price ended his days in Llanfyllin workhouse. I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any information, and would be very interested to know the address of his former house in Welshpool.

  5. ROY CLAFFEY Says:

The home of the Price family was “Marcella” on Salop Road, located in the semi-detached villas on the left coming in from Shrewsbury, just before the Shell filling station. Dr. Price’s home was 2, Erw Wen, a white-painted house on the corner of the road opposite W.R. Davies, the Ford agent, on Salop Road. Iago did, indeed, end his days in Llanfyllin Workhouse but he had had several sojourns there before his final visit. Dr. Richard eked out a living from writing and teaching music and fom being organist and choirmaster at St. Mary’s but was very well supported by Capt. W.E. Evans, the Borough Surveyor. who lived at “Penmaes” near the parish church.

  6. Carol Dutchman-Smith Says:

I have just read the details re Richard Maldwyn Price, most interesting. However, I have a feeling he might be related through marriage rather than a blood relative, but I will continue with the research. Do you know of the Jehu family from Llanfair? I obtained a list of mourners at RMP’s funeral, Jehu’s are noted as second cousins. A sister of my late mother’s was brought up by 2 Jehu sisters when their mother died. The search continues!

  7. ROY CLAFFEY Says:

I remember Brett Jehu and his wife who lived on Welshpool High Street in the 1950s. They were committee members of the Welshpool Music Club which met in the Modern Secondary School in Erw Wen and is now the High School. Their house was subsequently demolished to make way for a road connecting Brook Street with High Street as part of the re-modelling of Welshpool in the 1970s. By way of compensation, I guess, this road is now named Jehu Road.

  8. Carol Dutchman-Smith Says:

Thank you Roy for the info relating to Jehu’s. The sisters lived in Llanfair Caer but I dont know the house name. Do you have any recordings of RMP’s music? I know there is nothing on CD, however I have traced some sheet music thro his publisher Gwynn Publishing. I’ve not visited W’pool this year but will look at the houses you mention on my next visit

  9. ROY CLAFFEY Says:

Yes, I have a track taken from an old 10″ 78rpm record of his “Welsh Fantasy” for brass band. Looking at the Gwynn list of “Dickie’s” music, I often played the “Romance” for violin and piano with him and also his “Recreation Suite” which was in three movements but this is not listed by Gwynn and I have no idea what became of the sheet music. Something I do treasure, though, is his manuscript arrangement of the “Lost Chord” for violin and piano which I have played in many a concert over the years. When he died, he left me a violin because I didn’t have a good enough instrument, so he said. He was a delightful teacher who could play any number of instruments. I have been accompanied by him on the harmonium, church organ, saxophone, piano, clarinet and piano accordion but he was a terrible violinist!. I have yet to hear his equal (professional or not) in his rendition of the great Bach “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” on the organ of St. Mary’s Church which he would sometimes play as a pre-evening service piece and forget the vicar and choir were waiting to come down the aisle as the church shook to its very foundations.

  10. Violet Green Says:

My grandmother was Thomas Maldwyn\’s cousin – for many years I have longed to be able to hear TMP\’s or RMP\’s work but recordings are so hard to come by and time passes so quickly. Does anyone know of any commercially available recordings available? I know sheet music is around but sadly the musical genes have passed me by and I need to hear it played.

  11. Carol Dutchman-Smith Says:

    Message for Roy
That is so interetsting to read your latest comments. Do you have the track on a tape or CD as there is nothing available now in any music catalogue. Unfortunately, I do not play any musical instrument so have to ask a friend to play the piece I printed from the internet. RMP died before I was born and it was a chance remark by a second cousin in Welshpool that I became aware of him. Perhaps it is time for another project to revive interest in his music.

  12. Roy Claffey Says:

I can put the music on to a CD, although it is only three minutes long.If you are prepared to give me your address, you could ring me on 01938 552993 to arrange this. (I hope I don’t fall foul of the moderator in suggesting this).

  13. hugh smith Says:

Does anyone know what became of the Williams family that owned the greengrocers on the high street in the 50’s?

  14. ROY CLAFFEY Says:

I think you are referring to the Williams brothers, Elwyn and Trefor whose shop was next to the fish and chip palace. Elwyn had a superb tenor voice as a member of both Welshpool Choral Society and the Montgomeryshire Festival Chorus but died quite a few years ago. Trefor, although wheechair-bound, is still about the town with his wife, Jean. Hope this helps.

  15. hugh smith Says:

Thank you for that. Did either brother have a daughter, Joan or Jean who would be round about 70 years of age now?

  16. Sue Says:

  17. ROY CLAFFEY Says:
