Day of Voluntary Simplicity
Posted on November 25th, 2006 filed in Environment, Misc
Today is Buy Nothing Day 2006. It’s a day to switch off from shopping and live more. It’s a chance to opt out of the pre-Christmas shopping frenzy albeit for just one day in the year. And most importantly it is a day to ask yourself serious questions and reflect on how you live your life.
Here’s a challenge… Choose a day of Voluntary Simplicity.
Opt out of shopping, spending, buying, consuming for just one day.
Choose it.
Let your life speak.

That’s a great image. It says it all for me really.
Moreover, we need something to replace it. Something substantial, real, pertinent. Something that feeds the soul, fills us with heart.
As I’ve been discovering my own kind of voluntary simplicity, it’s become clear that my actions are more often about *not* doing things – and that’s the way I describe it to myself. But it needs to be more than that.
It needs to be about creating positive alternatives – good experiences, both individual and those shared as part of communities.
Otherwise, what are we, if nothing more than a cog in the cycle of ‘work, buy, consume, die’?
Thanks for the inspiration!
